Newsroom - Video/Audio: Bernie Sanders - U.S. Senator for Vermont
I echoed some of Senator Sander's words at a recent open mic night held on Plattsburgh's campus. We have dozens of major "American" corporations outsourcing their labor to cheaper countries, stashing their tax havens in remote areas such as the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The only time these corporations "value" America is when it comes time for bailouts. Then all of the sudden the American taxpayer is treasured, for a brief and flirting moment. Well, I agree when Mr. Sanders says that these same corporations should go to the Cayman Islands, and where ever else their income is stored and ask them for a bailout. Why would they suck American taxpayers dry, stash their earnings offshore and beg for Americans to bail them out? Unfortunately money speaks volumes, and these enterprises have enough to fill libraries forever. Citizens United vs. F.E.C. perhaps dealt the final blow to any effective oversight of the corrupting influence that money has over politics. That's an ironic name if you ask me. Citizens United? Are we talking American taxpayers, struggling to stay afloat? No, we're talking about corporations which have sought and obtained the authority to spend millions on elections, political action committees and further endorsements for candidates who will be sure to keep their mechanical palms greased. These same corporations have time and again, betrayed many of those seeking a fair and level playing field. They've compensated C.E.O.s to the top of the latter while kicking off those hanging to the rungs by their fingertips. Now, with no apparent sense of limitations, many of these companies hold the American legal system in a tight grasp. They essentially buy politicians and the heads of agencies. Micheal Taylor, a former Monsanto lobbyist is now the head of the F.D.A. This is not a mere accident. Monsanto, the largest biotech firm in America, dumped out, what, to the average person, seems like large sums of money, but to them is chump change. It's worth it for them, when the F.D.A. shields genetically modified foods from independent testing before being declared safe for public consumption. This is not the case in other nations. Europe has largely phased out genetically modified foods, after fervent public opposition. Argentina recently established a ten year ban, preventing Monsanto's influence over their agriculture. Here, I just got an email from Food Democracy Now! saying this: "We regret to inform you, but this morning at 10:54 AM EST, Congress passed the Continuing Resolution, HR 933 that contained the dangerous provision that strips the important concept of “judicial review” from our courts, caving to Monsanto." Hot off the press, and a signal to take action now.
Tell President Obama to block the Monsanto Protection Act, and Contact your Member of Congress and Senators to express your outrage at granting a blank check for Monsanto! Every voice counts!
