WAR: Willfully Annilating Reason

Today's (June 10th) Truthout article by Tom Englehardt titled "Don't Walk Away From War", offers another perspective for war in general and all of the commentary surrounding Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.  Englehardt depicts Bergdahl as disillusioned with the war in Afghanistan.  One way this is expressed is through emails home where Bergdahl writes

"The U.S. army is the biggest joke the world has to laugh at.  It is the army of liars, backstabbers, fools, and bullies. The few good SGTs [sergeants] are getting out as soon as they can, and they are telling us privates to do the same....I am sorry for everything here. These people need help, yet what they get is the most conceited country in the world telling them that they are nothing and that they are stupid, that they have no idea how to live."

Englehardt also keenly states " Think whatever you want about war and American war-making, but keep in mind that we are inside an enormous propaganda machine of militarism, even if we barely acknowledge the space in our lives that it fills. Inside it, only certain opinions, certain thoughts, are acceptable, or even in some sense possible."

This is no surprise considering General Electric "makes aircraft engines and nuclear reactors, and keeps criticism at bay with its ownership of media giants NBC, CNBC, Telemundo, Bravo, and, in partnership with Microsoft, msnbc.com. GE’s recent partnership with Vivendi added Universal Studios, USA, Trio and Sci-fi cable channels to its $43 billion media empire" (http://forum.prisonplanet.com/index.php?topic=2762.0)

GE is by no means alone in profiting from war while suppressing dissent via media control, however it is a crucial player in this decidedly sick game.  Take for instance these statistics:

CEO: Jeffrey R. Immelt
Military contracts 2005: $2.2 billion
Defense-related contributions in the 2004 election cycle: $220,950*

It's often said that truth is the first casualty in war.  With more ways to profit from war than ever before,  we see this exactly.  It takes some digging, but it's well worth it rather than to remain buried under dangerous lies and distortion.
