Heralders of Hate

I just watched a Twilight Zone episode titled "He's Alive", in which a young man (Peter) who makes hate speeches against minorities is taught by a man experienced in this field, later revealed as Adolf Hitler.  Hitler instructs the man to grow his audience by killing off dissenters and uniting around common issues like nationalism.  At the end, Peter is killed by the police and Rod Serling asks the question "Where will he (Hitler) turn next?"  Serling's message was that hate mongers like Hitler are kept alive by our hatred of others.  As a result of discrimination, greed and irrational fears, the door is opened for evil to walk in.  Secretary of State, Madeline Albright, when asked if the US sanctions against Iraq, which killed an estimated 500,000 children, was worth it replied yes.    Text of 60 Minutes Interview (5/12/96)   Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more

The Great Auction

The National Education Association's comment on sequestration for March 2013: http://www.nea.org/home/52610.htm My remarks... There's a great auction held every four years Filled with high-class auctioneers So everyone can walk in fear Afraid of what brought them here Leaders sold to industry lobby Like some kind of twisted hobby Billions spent on legalized bribery While funds shrink from public libraries Education driven to its knees To pay for corporate fees 3 billion dollars set to be cut This means more school doors shut While corporate kings keep their strut  Like Animal Farm, we're equal but Some more than others Hide the truth under floor covers These cuts shouldn't stay ignored Check out nea.org And the website: opensecrets To see how we're brought to peices But one thing, we're not alone Our power's more than any drone Together we stand, and demand That our lives be no more planned If this exists, we'll never fail T

The Forgotten (For Hawaii Democrat Representative, Tom Brower)

I am the forgotten, left out on the street I've nowhere to go, nothing to eat Wherever I look, people mock and jeer This brave new world has filled me with fear There once was a time when I'd receive care Not kept locked away in a state of despair  But that doesn't work with policy today So they fill me with drugs and pretend I'm ok I know a nation is not really great When its poorest people are cast like fish bait My number is growing, but still we don't care I'm just a strange creature at which people stare There's money enough, but we never share Better for the wealthy to increase their lair May we abolish the language of more And to the abandoned, open our door Give of ourselves, before we take It's not about how much we make Life is a balance disturbed by greed Ruthlessly taking from people in need To restore this balance we must become less Living each day, without such excess A concept so easy to live if you try Then w

30 Days

I came across musician, Natalie Grant's Facebook page and found she posted about a woman who  "lost her job and has come on very hard times. The bank is foreclosing on her house. She wants a place for her little grandchildren to continue to come... She's asking God for a 30-day extension on the foreclosure...".   The post was a sobering reminder that this is the story of thousands of Americans who, through decreased wages and work availability, have faced foreclosure.  Homes they worked for, raised families in and paid taxes on, set to be taken by the same financial institutions whose myopic fraud largely led to this tragedy.  I cannot fathom the stress these people go through, but I'm disgusted at a financial system which treats them as commodities.  A poignant example of this was when the urban housing department (HUD), boarded up homes in New Orleans, with full support of the Mayor, after Katrina.  A group called the Yes Men, which poses as people represe

I know we need planetary reform These super storms should not be the norm While we deny global warming exists Nature drags us to the abyss Scientific evidence gone amiss When we value corporate bliss What’s the price on a field if you’re Monsanto? Will we yield when the farmers can’t grow? Ecological footprints are denied Behind the veil of monetary pride Kyoto accords don’t mix well with trade It’s time to end this constant charade The truth needs to shine over us like the sun We know the price of it all but the value of none
