Letter to NYC Mayor Bloomberg
Dear Mayor,
I'm a college student from Long Island, and have visited New York City, numerous times. I was impressed at the captivating beauty of the skyscrapers and fantastic display of lights at night. However, I'm aware that under the surface of these wonderful sights exists a growing number of city residents who struggle daily to achieve and maintain a comfortable and rewarding lifestyle. The May 6, 2013 issue of The Nation dubs NYC "The Gilded City". As the Occupy Movements have demonstrated, the disparity of wealth among the rich and the rest is exploding. According to the Fiscal Policy Institute, "Between 2000 and 2010,family incomes in NYC's wealthiest neighborhoods increased by over 55%, while family incomes of the city's poorest neighborhoods decreased by 0.2%". As someone worth $24 billion, why won't you support pay boosts and opportunities for sustainable jobs for those in need? The Nation states "Between July 2008 and July 2012, NYC had a net loss of 60,000 jobs paying $45,00 a year or more, while gaining over 130,000 jobs paying less than $45,000". I urge you to, as the mayor of Seattle recently did, raise the wages of these struggling workers. The wealthy in NYC are doing very well, and can afford to be taxed more than they currently are. Please view this, not as an attack on you or the wealthy, but as an invitation to a different perspective. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
Joe Albrecht
