I just read some of a Truth-Out article titled "Richest 300 Persons on Earth Have More Money than Poorest 3 billion."  It lists the World Banks international loans and manipulation of financial laws as reasons why.  I list sickness as the chief reason.  The disease manifesting itself among the wealthy and powerful as a desire for more wealth and power.  In this craze, the natural world, human health and safety and millions of workers are sacrificed.  Let's take Apple as just one example.  Apple has, according to a NY Times "Business Day" article, "offshore entities holding tens of billions of dollars while claiming to be tax resident nowhere."  This is worse than criminal, it is sickening.  At a time when our public schools are decaying, infrastructure is collapsing and our environment is in peril, the world's wealthiest only seem to care about becoming wealthier.  The Wall Street Journal analyzed 60 major "American" companies and found they stashed a total of $166 billion overseas.  These same companies rely on U.S. taxpayer dollars to bail them out, but don't see need to return the favor.  Instead of a bailout, we get a sell out; and the most vulnerable, a growing number of us, bear the burden.  We have sold out our manufacturing base for greater corporate wealth, yet the giants don't share this increased wealth.  It's a crime that's legalized, but nonetheless disastrous.  I'm grateful not to be caught up in this craze for more, but unsettled about those who are.  Saint Augustine said "Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe."  I believe that all of us, even the most prosperous of the Earth, have a moral conscience.  Following this conscience set's some of us apart from others, but we all have it, and we all can listen to it no matter what our past actions were.  I pray the Earth's wealthiest and most powerful inhabitants use this conscience for the betterment of the majority.
