Taking a Closer Look
Is life always like an act where you have to be
someone else in order to cope with society? I
disagree. I remember as a young child, maybe six
my dad took me to the park. He walked me over towards
this obstacle which had different bars going accross
that increased in height until a certain point and then
began to lower to the ground."Go for it Joe" he said
right away. When I looked at the obstacle at first I
didn't want to."I'll hurt myself" I said . He began to
get mad after I stalled for about fifteen minutes.
"Joe if you don't even try to do it we're going home,
and you're going to bed". I began climbing the first
ascending rungs. Eventually I stopped because of fear.
He kept yelling at me so I climbed down, went on the
slide, and began to sing a song."Why do I need parents
I don't need a Mom or Dad." I sang. When he heard
this he got madder. Then he told me "if you don't do it,
then you will feel worse when we go home knowing
that your fear controlled you". I ran towards the
obstacle and slowed down when I began climbing. I
was at the highest point and then I ascended down
the remaining bars. Feeling great about myself, I gave
him a hug. After that I remember numerous occasions
which were similar to that event.
Now in today's society I see many people who don't seem to climb
the higher bar in their lives, because it's out of
their comfort zone. When you don't venture out of
your comfort zone, you are not learning about all
of the many different types of good people that
there are. It may seem like a whole different world
as soon as you cross the gap between comfortable
and challenging. Once you deal with challenging
situations then you find out that everything is
not as bad as it seemed to be. You can take this
confidence that you gained from putting yourself
in challenging situations. Confidence can help avoid
conflict with other issues in your life that can be
totally unrelated. Which ever path that you choose
don't be hesitant to wander a little off course, you
never know what might come from it.
